Healthcare and insurance checklist for moving abroad

Moving abroad changes more than an address. Public-care eligibility, employer cover, prescriptions and your existing insurance can all depend on residence and enrollment. Check those arrangements before your departure rather than assuming a visa provides healthcare.

Coverage in detail

01

Confirm official eligibility separately

Ask the destination's immigration agency about your nationality, purpose, intended dates and dependants. Ask the relevant health or social-insurance body about enrollment, contributions, waiting periods and services available to you. Permission to enter, permission to work and healthcare entitlement are separate questions.

02

Map existing cover and gaps

Obtain written details of employer and public benefits, including when they start and end. Ask your existing insurer whether relocation changes eligibility, geography or renewal. Avoid an uninsured gap, but check duplicate cover and coordination rules if policies overlap.

03

Plan medicines and continuing care

Discuss your move with your treating clinician and arrange appropriate records and prescriptions. Check official medicine-import rules, local availability and specialist access. Disclose medical history through secure underwriting channels; a general quote request does not establish acceptance.

04

Build a local care plan

Identify nearby emergency care and routine providers. Verify current insurer networks, direct billing and assistance contacts. If spending time on islands or remote work sites, ask about approved evacuation destinations, rescue exclusions and transport logistics.

05

Revisit at relocation and renewal

Tell the insurer about residence or family changes as required. Review the renewal notice, benefits, premium and medical continuity before accepting a switch. Keep membership cards, claim records and authorized emergency contacts accessible to trusted family members.

06

A practical departure sequence

Before choosing cover, map your current public, employer and private arrangements and their end dates. While arranging the move, ask your clinician about continuity of care, records and medicines, then verify local medicine rules and provider access. Before departure, confirm accepted policy terms, the actual start date and assistance contacts.

After arrival, confirm any required enrollment and identify routine and urgent care near your home. Recheck the plan when work, residence or family circumstances change. This sequence is an organizing checklist, not a substitute for official requirements or a guarantee that treatment is insured.

07

Dependants and changes in employment

Ask how a partner, child or newborn is added and whether there are deadlines, waiting periods or fresh underwriting. Employer cover may end when employment changes and may not provide a continuation option; request the actual scheme rules before relying on it.

A move to another country can change residence eligibility, the area of cover, premium or renewal options. Give the insurer the proposed change through its required process and obtain written confirmation rather than assuming worldwide cover makes the policy portable.

Your checklist

  • Confirm visa and public-health eligibility with official bodies.
  • Check employer cover dates and dependent enrollment.
  • Secure underwriting acceptance before ending existing cover.
  • Check medicines, records and routine-care access.
  • Save assistance contacts and review relocation/renewal terms.
