Bupa Global vs Allianz Care is a comparison of two international health insurers that both include medical evacuation on every plan but package everything else differently. Bupa Global sells five fixed tiers, from the hospital-only Major Medical to the unlimited Ultimate. Allianz Care sells three Core hospital plans and lets you add outpatient and dental at the same tier.
We read both insurers' published plan pages, brochures, benefit tables and guides on 28 September 2026 and set 17 terms side by side, in the same rows we use for every provider comparison. Every figure is the insurer's own. Where Bupa does not publish a term, the table says so.
Neither insurer comes out ahead on everything. Your plans for a family, your medical history and how much you want fixed in writing before you buy decide which terms matter to you.

In short
Bupa Global and Allianz Care both include medical evacuation on every tier, and their mid-to-high limits sit close together: Bupa Elite at US$5,100,000 and Allianz Care Signature at US$5,000,000. Above that, only Bupa has an unlimited plan, Ultimate. The clearest difference is maternity: Allianz covers it from its middle tier, Care Enhanced, after 12 months, while Bupa covers it only on Elite and Ultimate, after 18 months. Allianz publishes a 24-month moratorium, a route that carries over your previous insurer's terms and a 30-day cooling-off period, and accepts new applicants up to the day before their 76th birthday (full underwriting) or 65th (moratorium). Bupa states no upper age limit for plans issued by Bupa Insurance Limited, publishes a 30-day cooling-off refund for Ultimate only, and builds outpatient, funded health checks and published rehabilitation days into its tiers. This is general information, not advice on your situation.

Figures are the insurers' own, checked on 28 September 2026. Bupa's come from its UK and Channel Islands brochure dated April 2026 and its Guernsey plan comparison; its entry age is from its target market statement for plans issued by Bupa Insurance Limited (May 2026) and its Ultimate cancellation terms from the Ultimate membership guide (October 2026 edition), both read on 29 September 2026. Limits and tiers can differ by the country your policy is issued from. Allianz's come from its Table of Benefits and Individual Benefit Guide valid from 1 November 2025. Both publish in sterling as well as US dollars (Bupa Elite £3,000,000; Allianz Care Signature £3,100,000). The certificate of insurance you receive is the document that binds.
Who insures you with Bupa Global and Allianz Care?
Bupa Global is Bupa's international health insurance division, and the insurer depends on where your policy is issued. UK and Channel Islands policies are written by Bupa Insurance Limited. EEA policies are written by Bupa Global DAC, regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. Policies issued in the Dubai International Financial Centre sit with Bupa Global Middle East (DIFC) Ltd, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority. In Hong Kong, Bupa Global plans are insured by Bupa (Asia) Limited, a separate product set with its own limits: if you live there, compare against the Hong Kong plan documents. Bupa's legal notices list every entity.
Allianz Care is a brand of AWP Health & Life SA, a French insurer acting through its Irish branch in Dublin and regulated by France's ACPR. Its regulatory information states that the policy "is governed by French law unless otherwise required".
The practical point is the same for both: the company named on your certificate decides which regulator and which complaints route you have. Ask which one it is before you sign.
How do the annual limits compare?
Bupa Global and Allianz Care line up closely at the upper-middle of their ranges, and part ways at the top, where only Bupa sells an unlimited plan.
| Bupa Global | Limit | Allianz Care | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Select | £1,000,000 (US$1,700,000) | Care Base | £830,000 (US$1,350,000) |
| Premier | £1,500,000 (US$2,550,000) | Care Enhanced | £1,660,000 (US$2,700,000) |

| Ultimate | Unlimited |

Notice the currency effect. In sterling, Allianz's Care Signature (£3,100,000) sits above Bupa Elite (£3,000,000). In US dollars, Bupa Elite (US$5,100,000) sits above Care Signature (US$5,000,000). Each insurer converts at its own published rate, so treat those two tiers as level and decide on the other rows.
Fixed tiers or a core plan with add-ons: how are they built?
Bupa Global sells complete tiers. Major Medical covers hospital treatment only, with no outpatient cover. Select adds outpatient up to £7,500, Premier up to £15,000, Elite up to £50,000 and Ultimate without a limit. Premier and Elite add dental and optical, Ultimate includes dental too, and Elite and Ultimate add maternity and fertility. You move up a tier to get a benefit; you cannot bolt one on.
Allianz Care sells a compulsory Core hospital plan at Care Base, Care Enhanced or Care Signature, and two optional add-ons that must match the Core tier:
- Outpatient plan: up to £8,300 on Care Base, £20,750 on Care Enhanced, no limit on Care Signature
- Dental plan: up to £995 on Care Base, £1,543 on Care Enhanced, no limit on Care Signature, with dental treatment refunded at 80% on Base and Enhanced
Allianz does not let you buy outpatient or dental on their own, or mix a Care Base Core with a Care Signature outpatient plan.
So the closest like-for-like pairs are Bupa Major Medical against an Allianz Core plan with no add-ons (hospital only), and Bupa Select or Premier against an Allianz Core plus Outpatient plan. Compare quotes at those pairings, not at tiers with similar names.
Which reaches maternity cover sooner?
Allianz Care does, on both measures that matter: the tier and the wait. Allianz covers maternity on Care Enhanced, its middle tier, and Care Signature, after 12 months. Bupa Global covers maternity only on Elite and Ultimate, after 18 months.
| Term | Bupa Global | Allianz Care |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest tier with maternity | Elite | Care Enhanced |
| Waiting period | 18 months | 12 months |
| Published limit, entry maternity tier | Elite: £10,000 normal birth, £10,000 caesarean, £20,000 complications | Care Enhanced: £4,150 (US$6,750) routine maternity per pregnancy |
| Fertility | Elite £6,000 a year, Ultimate £10,000, after 18 months | Care Signature outpatient plan, after 12 months |
Allianz's planning a family page states that Care Enhanced and Care Signature "include routine maternity, complications of childbirth and complications of pregnancy" and that "a 12-month waiting period applies". Bupa's April 2026 brochure lists "Maternity / childbirth (18 month waiting period)" on Elite and Ultimate.
Read the limits carefully: Bupa's Elite figures are split by type of birth, Allianz's Care Enhanced figure is for routine maternity, and they are not the same benefit measured the same way. The timing is the cleaner comparison. If the birth would fall between 12 and 18 months after you buy, Allianz's Care Enhanced or Care Signature can cover it and Bupa cannot. See our guide to maternity and family cover, and our country pages for Singapore and Hong Kong, where private maternity is a large bill.
How do they underwrite pre-existing conditions?
Allianz Care publishes three routes: full medical underwriting; a moratorium, where a condition becomes eligible after "a continuous 24-month period after your start date" with no symptoms, treatment, medication or advice for it; and continuation of your previous insurer's terms, "the continuation of the same underwriting terms, including any special exclusions and/or surcharges, that applied with your previous insurer".
Bupa Global excludes pre-existing conditions "unless you have applied for cover that includes a medical loading to cover these conditions", so some can be covered for a higher premium after underwriting. Bupa's individual application form states that the policy is "fully medical underwritten", and no Bupa document we read offers a moratorium.
If you already hold an international policy with a condition accepted, ask Allianz about carrying those terms across before you complete any new questionnaire. If you have a condition you would like covered from day one, ask Bupa what loading it would apply, because a loading is the route Bupa describes.
What do they publish about age, cancellation and payment?
Allianz Care publishes all three for every plan. Bupa Global publishes parts of two.
Allianz Care:
- Maximum age to join: "up to the day before their 76th birthday" with full medical underwriting, or "up to the day before their 65th birthday" on moratorium, per its Individual Benefit Guide.
- Cooling-off: 30 days from the start date. "After this, the policy may not be cancelled until renewal, regardless of whether a monthly or annual payment frequency is chosen."
- Paying monthly: 0% for annual payment, 3% half-yearly, 4% quarterly, 5% monthly.
Bupa Global:
- Maximum age to join: "There is no upper age limit" on plans issued by Bupa Insurance Limited, per its target market statement (May 2026). Bupa does not publish an entry age for policies issued by its other insurers.
- Cooling-off: on Ultimate, a full refund of that year's premium if you cancel within the first 30 days of cover and have made no claims for treatment in that time. Otherwise cancellation takes effect 14 days after you ask, per the Ultimate membership guide. Bupa does not publish cooling-off terms for Major Medical, Select, Premier or Elite.
- Paying monthly: no payment loading published.
Ask Bupa which of its insurers would issue your policy, and get the terms that apply to you in writing before you apply.
On renewal, both publish terms. Bupa states "No cancellation of policy based on claims pattern / history" and automatic renewal on all five tiers. Allianz states it renews automatically and will not add restrictions or exclusions personal to you at renewal for medical conditions that start after you join, provided you gave the information it asked for and have not applied to increase your cover. Neither means your premium stays flat: premiums still move with age and medical inflation.
How do they handle the United States and regional cover?
Bupa Global is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, its route into US providers. On its worldwide-excluding-US option you still get 28 days of emergency cover in the US. Allianz Care includes the USA only on its Worldwide area, and in the USA access runs through a partner network on a direct-billing basis.
Both sell cover narrower than worldwide. Bupa offers a Europe (including UK) area on Select, Premier and Elite. Allianz offers Europe or Africa. If your life is in one region, those options exist at both, and our cost guide explains why area of cover is one of the choices that shapes what you pay.
What else comes with each plan?
Bupa Global publishes more of its extras per tier than Allianz does.
- Health checks (Bupa): after 10 months, £750 on Select, £1,250 on Premier, £1,500 on Elite; £5,000 on Ultimate with no wait.
- Rehabilitation (Bupa): 45 days on Major Medical, 30 on Select and Premier, 60 on Elite, 90 on Ultimate, each policy year.
- Dental (Bupa): Premier, Elite and Ultimate, preventive dental after 6 months, routine and major restorative work on Premier and Elite after 6 months, orthodontics after 12 months up to £2,500 on Elite and £10,000 on Ultimate.
- Dental (Allianz): a separate add-on; orthodontics and dental prostheses after 10 months, orthodontics not available on Care Base.
- Short-term cover (Allianz): FlexiCare sells policy terms of 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, does not renew automatically and does not cover pre-existing conditions.
Non-medical evacuation is on Bupa Ultimate only. Medical evacuation is on every tier at both.
How much do Bupa Global and Allianz Care cost?
What you pay depends on your age, area of cover, deductible, tier, add-ons and medical history, so the same person can be quoted very differently depending on those choices. We do not publish price comparisons between insurers. Our expat health insurance cost guide explains what moves a premium and where the published evidence sits.
The deductible options are in the documents. Bupa's hospital deductible runs up to £5,000 on Select, £7,500 on Premier and £10,000 on Elite, with none on Ultimate, and its Major Medical deductibles are offered to UK and Channel Islands residents only. Select, Premier and Elite add a separate outpatient deductible of up to £1,000. Allianz offers none, US$1,350, US$4,050 or US$8,100 on the Core plan, and prints the premium discount each earns: 10%, 20% and 30%.
Which published facts matter for you

- Overall annual limit: Bupa Global runs from US$1,700,000 (Select) to unlimited (Ultimate); Allianz Care runs from US$1,350,000 (Care Base) to US$5,000,000 (Care Signature).
- Maternity: Bupa Global covers maternity on Elite and Ultimate after 18 months; Allianz Care covers it on Care Enhanced and Care Signature after 12 months.
- Pre-existing conditions: Bupa Global excludes them unless a medical loading is agreed, its individual applications are fully medically underwritten and it publishes no moratorium; Allianz Care offers full medical underwriting, a 24-month moratorium, or your previous insurer's terms carried over.
- Age at entry: Bupa Global publishes no upper age limit on plans issued by Bupa Insurance Limited (target market statement, May 2026) and does not publish one for its other insurers; Allianz Care accepts new applicants up to the day before their 76th birthday under full medical underwriting, and up to the day before their 65th birthday on moratorium.
- Cooling-off: Bupa Global's Ultimate gives a full refund within 30 days if you have not claimed, otherwise 14 days' notice, and Bupa publishes no terms for its other tiers; Allianz Care gives 30 days, then the policy is fixed until renewal.
- Paying monthly: Bupa Global publishes no payment loading; Allianz Care loads 5% monthly, 4% quarterly, 3% half-yearly and 0% annual.

- Insurer and regulator: Bupa Global issues through Bupa Insurance Limited (UK), Bupa Global DAC (Ireland, Central Bank of Ireland) for EEA policies and Bupa Global Middle East (DIFC) Ltd (Dubai Financial Services Authority); Allianz Care is AWP Health & Life SA, Irish Branch, regulated by France's ACPR.
- Cover for less than a year: Bupa Global's five tiers renew automatically; Allianz Care sells FlexiCare on policy terms of 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, not renewed automatically and with no cover for pre-existing conditions.
- Hospital-only cover: Bupa Global's Major Medical covers hospital treatment with no outpatient cover; Allianz Care's Core plan with no add-ons covers hospital treatment only.
Both include medical evacuation, so the quote and the hospitals you would use are what separate them.
What should you ask before buying either plan?
Five questions, answered in writing:
- Which company is my insurer? Bupa issues through different entities by country; Allianz through AWP Health & Life SA.
- When does maternity start, and on which tier? Care Enhanced at 12 months, or Bupa Elite at 18.
- Can my current exclusions carry over? Ask Allianz about continuation of terms. Bupa's individual applications are fully medically underwritten, and Bupa publishes no moratorium.
- What is the maximum age to join, and the cooling-off period? Allianz publishes both for every plan. Bupa publishes no upper age limit for plans issued by Bupa Insurance Limited and a cooling-off refund for Ultimate only, so ask which Bupa insurer would issue your policy.
- Does the insurer settle directly with the hospital I would use? Direct billing is agreed hospital by hospital.
How we compared them
