Your family still depends on your income.

Protection for a chosen period. Usually no savings or cash value.

The benefit
A death benefit to named beneficiaries if the insured dies while cover is in force and the death is covered.
The boundary
Outliving the term usually means cover ends without a payout. Renewal or conversion is available only if the contract provides it.

How it works in real life

A group of children smiling and waving at the camera

School fees and household income

A covered death benefit can help dependants fund future expenses during the chosen term. Match duration to the years of dependency and review after family changes.

A reducing mortgage balance

Decreasing cover may align with a reducing debt, but the benefit schedule and your mortgage balance can diverge. Level cover can address other continuing family needs.

You reach the end of the term

Ordinary term cover usually ends without a payout if you survive. Renewal, conversion or a return-of-premium feature applies only when expressly included.

Coverage in detail

01

Choose an amount and a duration around real commitments

Term life is life cover for a chosen time period. A death benefit is payable to named beneficiaries if the insured dies while the policy is in force and death is covered under the policy terms. It generally covers death from illness as well as accidents, subject to exclusions and accepted terms — unlike an accident-only death benefit.

Consider school fees, household expenses, mortgage debt and how long dependants may need support. Take existing assets and other cover into account rather than choosing a sum insured from a headline premium.

Terms such as 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years are illustrative options, not offers available to every applicant. Carrier, age, underwriting and residence can affect the durations actually available.

02

Level or decreasing cover — and premiums

A level sum insured stays the same during the specified period. A decreasing sum reduces according to a schedule and may suit a reducing financial commitment, such as a repayment mortgage. The schedule may not match your actual debt, so compare carefully.

Check whether premiums are guaranteed level, reviewable or change at renewal, how often they are due and what happens after missed payments. No real-time premium, instant purchase or verified price is offered on this page.

Most term life has no savings component or cash value. If you outlive the term, protection usually ends without a payment. Special return-of-premium arrangements are exceptions with their own terms, not a standard feature of term life.

03

Medical underwriting, residence and exclusions

The insurer may assess age, health, occupation, smoking and other risk factors. It may request medical evidence, offer adjusted terms or decline an application. Disclose information accurately through an approved application channel; do not include health history in this initial enquiry.

Confirm whether residents of your country can apply, the permitted geographical scope and obligations when moving countries. Being internationally mobile does not make a policy automatically portable. Check any restrictions involving travel, residence or sanctioned territories.

Read exclusions and limitations, including any suicide clause, hazardous-activity provisions and consequences of non-disclosure. Do not assume all non-accident deaths are excluded: term life generally covers illness as well as accidents, within the actual contract.

04

Renewal, conversion and moving abroad

Some policies offer renewal at the end of the term or conversion to another form of life cover. Check deadlines, maximum ages, eligible conversion products, premium changes and whether further medical evidence is required. These features are not universal.

If there is no applicable renewal or conversion option, obtaining replacement cover may require a new application based on your age, health and residence at that time. Do not cancel existing protection before replacement acceptance and effective dates are confirmed.

Before relocating, ask the insurer in writing whether cover continues, whether the move must be notified, how premiums can be paid and how overseas beneficiaries can claim. Portability must be established for the actual issuer and policy.

05

Beneficiaries and the claim process

Name beneficiaries as the policy permits, keep details current after family changes, and understand any trustee, estate or minor-beneficiary arrangements. The route and timing of payment depend on the policy and applicable law. Seek appropriate estate-planning advice when needed.

Tell the people who may claim where the policy details are kept. A death claim commonly requires a claim form and death documentation; overseas documents may need additional certification. Ask for the insurer’s actual process rather than assuming every country uses the same requirements.

Different risks. Different protection.

Questions before you buy

Friends sitting arm in arm looking out over a city
Does term life cover death from an illness?

Generally yes, as well as accidents, if the death occurs while the policy is in force and is covered under its terms. Exclusions, underwriting and accurate disclosure still matter.

What happens if I outlive the term?

Most term life ends without a payout or cash value. Renewal, conversion and return-of-premium features are exceptions that must be expressly included in the contract.

Can I choose a 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30-year term?

These are illustrative durations, not guaranteed options. The carrier, product, age, medical underwriting and residence determine the terms available to you.

Will my policy follow me when I move countries?

Not automatically. Obtain written confirmation of continued cover, residence-notification duties, payment arrangements and overseas claims requirements from the actual insurer.

Can I change the people who receive the benefit?

Check the policy’s beneficiary rules and any irrevocable nomination, trust or legal restrictions. Review nominations after family changes and ask about arrangements for minors.
