Who insures you?

AXA Global Healthcare sells through three insurers. Its three product information documents name AXA PPP healthcare Limited and AXA XL Insurance Company UK Limited, both regulated by the PRA and FCA, and AXA Insurance dac, regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland (AXA PPP, AXA XL, AXA Insurance dac). AXA does not publish which of the three insures which customers, so ask which one is named on your policy before you buy.

Allianz Care is a brand of AWP Health & Life SA, acting through its Irish branch and regulated by France's ACPR. Its regulatory information page says the policy is "governed by French law unless otherwise required".

How do the limits and plan structures differ?

AXA publishes a wider range of overall limits, at both ends.

Sources: AXA summary of benefits, Allianz Care plans page. In sterling, AXA runs from £250,000 to £5,000,000 and Allianz from £830,000 to £3,100,000.

AXA's tiers are fixed: outpatient is an optional upgrade on Foundation and Standard (US$1,600 or US$4,000 a year) and built in from Comprehensive (US$5,600) and Prestige (US$16,000). On Prestige Plus, consultations and diagnostic tests are covered up to the overall plan limit, per the summary of benefits.

Allianz Care starts with a compulsory Core plan. Outpatient and dental are add-ons that must match the Core tier and cannot be bought alone:

  • Outpatient plan: US$13,500 on Care Base, US$33,750 on Care Enhanced, no limit on Care Signature
  • Dental plan: US$1,500 on Care Base, US$2,500 on Care Enhanced, no limit on Care Signature

How do they handle evacuation?

AXA Global Healthcare and Allianz Care both include medical evacuation on every plan. AXA's evacuation page says evacuation costs are not taken "out of your overall benefit allowance", so an evacuation does not reduce what is left for treatment that year. Allianz includes it in the Core plan and, per its Table of Benefits, will "evacuate the insured person to the nearest appropriate medical centre", or home if your home country is inside your area of cover. Allianz requires pre-authorisation.

Which has the shorter maternity wait?

Allianz Care's maternity wait is 12 months. AXA's is 18.

AXA's maternity page calls its 18-month wait a "moratorium" and says maternity is "not available as an added extra". That is a waiting period for the pregnancy benefit, not the underwriting route below. Allianz's planning a family page says Care Enhanced and Care Signature "include routine maternity, complications of childbirth and complications of pregnancy" and that "a 12-month waiting period applies". Limits: AXA summary of benefits, Allianz Table of Benefits.

How do their moratoriums and age limits compare?

AXA Global Healthcare and Allianz Care both offer full medical underwriting, a moratorium and a switch from your previous insurer. The moratorium rules differ.

  • AXA moratorium: per its retiree page, conditions you had "in the five years before you joined" are excluded "until you have been a member for two years in a row and you have had a period of two years trouble-free from that condition".
  • Allianz moratorium: per its plans page, a pre-existing condition becomes eligible after "a continuous 24-month period after your start date" without symptoms, treatment, medication, a special diet or advice.

Age limits, from the same sources plus Allianz's Individual Benefit Guide:

MoratoriumUnder 80 at the start of coverUp to the day before your 65th birthday
Switch from another insurerUnder 80 (competitor switch)No age stated on the pages we read
Full medical underwritingNo upper age stated. At 80 and over, "there will be some exclusions"Up to the day before your 76th birthday

AXA also accepts people aged 80 or over on a plan transfer or a group leave basis.

What about US treatment and areas of cover?

AXA Global Healthcare offers two areas: worldwide, or worldwide excluding the USA. On the excluding option, AXA's summary of benefits still covers emergency inpatient treatment in the USA on every tier except Foundation: up to six weeks and US$16,000 on Standard, rising to ten weeks and US$48,000 on Prestige Plus.

Allianz Care offers four areas: worldwide, worldwide excluding the USA, Europe, or Africa. In the USA, access runs through a third-party partner on direct billing, per its benefit guide. Allianz covers emergencies on trips outside your area of up to six weeks: US$135,000 on Care Base, US$337,500 on Care Enhanced, in full on Care Signature.

Can you cancel, and what does paying monthly cost?

AXA gives you 14 days from receiving your membership pack, with a refund if no claims have been paid. After that, its product information documents (AXA PPP, AXA XL, AXA Insurance dac) say monthly and quarterly payers can stop from the next payment date. Annual payers get a pro-rata refund for the whole months left, less an administration fee of US$70 (£50, €55) and the cost of any claims that year.

Allianz gives 30 days from the start date. Then, in its words on the plans page, "the policy may not be cancelled until renewal, regardless of whether a monthly or annual payment frequency is chosen."

AXA says paying annually "will save you 5% on your total cost" (plans page). Allianz loads 3% half-yearly, 4% quarterly and 5% monthly.

Staying less than a year? AXA sells short-term cover for 3 to 11 months at Foundation or Standard level. Allianz sells FlexiCare on policy terms of 3, 6, 9 or 12 months; it does not renew automatically and does not cover pre-existing conditions.

How much do AXA and Allianz cost?

Premiums depend on your age, area, excess, tier, add-ons and medical history, so we publish no price comparisons. Our expat health insurance cost guide explains what moves a premium and where the published evidence sits.
