What the official rules say

Mainland China · national orientation and Beijing city guidance

Choose the care setting before choosing a policy. Public hospitals, international departments and private hospitals can have different payment and language arrangements. Hong Kong and Macao have separate systems.

Public, private and international departments

The National Health Commission’s 19 March 2019 orientation describes public and private hospitals, foreign-run facilities and international/VIP departments in larger cities. This older guide explains the categories; it does not establish current prices or a nationwide insurer network.

An overseas insurance card is not universal cashless access

The National Immigration Administration’s 26 March 2021 healthcare guide warns that some public hospitals do not recognise foreign medical insurance. Confirm the covered hospital and disease categories and obtain formal receipts for reimbursement. This reference guidance is not a current policy acceptance decision.

Beijing: choose a facility and verify its payment arrangement

Beijing’s current medical guide lists facilities providing foreign-language services and explains commercial-insurance direct settlement where the insurer has an arrangement with the institution. Verify your exact department, treatment, authorisation and insurer agreement. A hospital appearing in a government guide is not proof that your policy covers it.

Employee benefits, visa permission and IPMI are separate

Ask HR and the relevant local authority whether social-insurance enrollment applies to your employment and nationality, and how benefits operate. No universal visa insurance requirement, visa-free duration or employer contribution amount is established here. Confirm current requirements with the authority handling your application.

Practical insurance implications

  • Does the plan include your chosen international/VIP department, or restrict expensive hospitals?
  • Are outpatient medicines, diagnostics and pre-existing conditions covered under the accepted schedule?
  • Does the insurer require a bilingual medical report, original receipts or pre-authorisation?
  • Are Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, home visits and USA trips correctly included or excluded?
  • For age 75, obtain current new-entry eligibility and underwriting acceptance; a returned quote does not establish acceptance.
Does an international health policy guarantee direct billing in China?

No. NIA advises that some public hospitals do not recognise overseas medical insurance. Beijing describes direct settlement only where the insurer and medical institution have an arrangement. Confirm the exact facility, department, treatment and payment guarantee.

Can Beijing’s guide determine costs or access in Shanghai?

No. It is a city-specific resource. Ask the Shanghai facility and your insurer about its current charges, language services, department and network status.

Public, employer and private healthcare

Mainland China has public hospitals, private facilities and international or VIP departments. A public hospital visit is not proof of subsidised entitlement or acceptance of an overseas insurance card. Confirm employee social-insurance enrollment separately with HR and the local authority.

Find care where you will actually stay

Choose the city and the precise department, not just the hospital group. Beijing's official medical guide lists Peking Union Medical College Hospital international services, Beijing United Family and Raffles Hospital Beijing among its emergency-care examples. These are government-listed examples, not verified insurer-network partners. Shanghai, Shenzhen and other cities need their own facility checks.

Emergency and evacuation planning

For travel outside your base, ask whether the policy covers initial emergency care, ground transport and medically necessary evacuation to a suitable facility. Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao must be checked separately in the geographic schedule. Keep receipts and original medical records for reimbursement.

Seek urgent medical care without delaying for approval. Save the locally confirmed emergency number and insurer assistance details. For planned transfers, use the insurer's approval process; repatriation is not automatically transport to your preferred country.

Typical relocation and visit scenarios

Scenario 1 · questions, not eligibility decisions

A family in Beijing: verify the paediatric clinic, language support and routine outpatient medicines under each member’s accepted schedule.

Scenario 2 · questions, not eligibility decisions

An employee in Shanghai: ask HR about enrollment and compare the employer network with your intended international department.

Scenario 3 · questions, not eligibility decisions

A 75-year-old newcomer: obtain new-entry eligibility and accepted medical terms before relying on a returned quotation or brand name.

Scenario 4 · questions, not eligibility decisions

A traveller outside the main cities: check initial emergency payment, original receipt requirements and approved onward transport to suitable care.

Questions specific to your care plan

  • Does this precise hospital department accept direct settlement from my exact insurer?
  • Are Mainland China and Hong Kong or Macao visits correctly covered in the geographic schedule?
  • What original records, authorisation, deposits and outpatient limits apply?

Destination insurance questions

Can a newcomer assume public or employer cover starts on arrival?

No. Confirm the responsible scheme, status, enrollment, start date, dependants and charges. Build the check around your Mainland China city, specific department and travel to Hong Kong or Macao; this page does not establish personal entitlement.

Will my private hospital visit be cashless?

Verify the exact plan, branch, service and approval. A country-wide or brand network label is not a guarantee. Inpatient and outpatient arrangements can differ, and deposits, copays or excluded charges can remain.

Should a resident and a visitor buy the same type of cover?

Not automatically. A resident may need routine and continuing care, while a visitor may seek unexpected trip protection. Compare actual dates, public or employer benefits, accepted medical history and maximum trip duration rather than stay length alone.

Can I choose an evacuation destination or rely on a visa rule here?

No. Transport depends on the assistance team’s medical approval, destination and contract terms. Passport-specific rules, mandatory limits and emergency numbers remain unknown here until supported by appropriately scoped official evidence.

Travel insurance

For a short trip, travel cover is designed for unexpected events; check its terms. This is a category to discuss, not a recommendation. It is not a live visa or entry eligibility check: rules depend on your passport, purpose and exact travel dates, which only the official authority can confirm.

Your checklist

  • Confirm China entry and visa rules with the official agency for your passport (choose your passport issuing country above), holiday, 30 days and your intended travel dates. This checklist does not determine visa eligibility.

  • Ask the relevant public-health or employer scheme about your eligibility, enrollment date, charges and dependent benefits.
  • For a short trip, travel cover may address eligible unexpected events. Check routine-care needs, medical history, activities and maximum trip duration before deciding it is adequate.
  • Verify preferred providers, authorization, assistance contacts and evacuation terms for your itinerary.

Provide your exact travel dates to official agencies. The details above only organize questions and preselect a request category; they do not make a coverage recommendation.
