Insurance, explained for people who live abroad.

Ten honest guides to choosing, understanding and using health and travel cover — written for real lives in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris and beyond.

Decisions that deserve a closer look

General buying guidance, not insurer-specific promises. The right answer comes from your accepted wording, residence eligibility and treatment needs.

Family cover and employee benefits

Start with a person-by-person inventory: who is insured through work, which dependants are enrolled, where each person lives, and which benefits and dates apply. An employee’s cover does not itself establish that a spouse or child is insured. Check separate member deductibles, shared family limits, children’s care and enrollment deadlines.

Before relying on two policies, ask how they coordinate benefits: overlapping cover does not mean double reimbursement. If employment ends, obtain the date workplace benefits stop and whether continuation is available. A personal replacement may require new underwriting; arrange accepted terms before creating a gap.

Maternity: plan the whole pathway

Read what starts or satisfies the maternity waiting period and whether prenatal visits, delivery and postnatal care have separate definitions or limits. Insurance bought before conception does not automatically satisfy every waiting-period rule. General hospital coverage is not routine maternity; complications may be handled under a different benefit.

Ask separately about newborn enrollment, the deadline, medical acceptance and neonatal care. A parent’s maternity benefit does not settle the child’s own cover. Obtain written guidance for treatment that crosses a policy year, a move or a change of employer.

CFE only, complementary cover or standalone IPMI?

Keep CFE affiliation, complementary private insurance and standalone international cover separate in your decision. For a CFE-plus-complementary arrangement, map which payer is approached first, how eligible expenses are assessed, and what remains payable by the member. Do not assume CFE alone meets the full cost of a private hospital bill.

Ask for the actual coordination process, reimbursement basis, accepted providers, waiting periods and exclusions. A complementary contract can have its own conditions and may require continued CFE affiliation. Compare that combined arrangement with a standalone IPMI contract on matched needs, not a headline premium. Our France guide contains separately scoped official CFE references; this chapter does not determine French public rights.

Portability is not a renewal guarantee

Portability concerns continuation when residence, employment or other eligibility circumstances change; renewal concerns continuation under the contract’s own provisions. Neither label alone promises the same issuer, benefits, premium or medical terms after a move.

Before relocating, ask whether notice is required and whether the contract is amended, locally reissued or replaced. Clarify ongoing treatment, prescriptions, accepted pre-existing conditions and any new waiting periods or underwriting. Home visits and travel outside the selected area are separate questions from permanent residence eligibility.

Age 75+: check entry, continuation and changes separately

No benchmark data at age 75 does not prove uninsurability. Entry limits, eligible residence markets, medical assessment and renewal provisions vary by product. A recorded unavailable quotation applies only to the checked profile and product, not every insurer. Do not use a younger age’s price as an estimate for 75.

Distinguish a new application from renewing existing cover, adding benefits or moving country. Request applicable age rules and written acceptance; do not cancel current insurance while investigating alternatives. A cheaper replacement is not necessarily an improvement if it excludes accepted conditions or resets waiting periods.

Benefit tiers: start with treatment, not the tier name

Map a likely care pathway: consultation, diagnostics, admission, follow-up and medicines. A hospital-focused tier may cover surgery performed as an outpatient but not ordinary outpatient visits. Check cancer/chronic treatment settings, mental health, maternity and dental independently; more extensive branding does not remove exclusions.

Hospital room categories, annual limits, networks and deductibles answer different questions. Verify the actual provider branch and service, whether authorisation or referral is needed, and your contribution. A tiered network label alone does not guarantee access to a particular clinician or a cashless service.

Direct billing needs a backup plan

Direct billing is a payment arrangement for specified providers and services, not a promise that you never pay upfront. Confirm the branch, treatment and payment guarantee. Deductibles, co-payments, deposits and excluded items may remain your responsibility even when a hospital settles part of the bill with the insurer.

Ask what happens if authorisation is delayed or the final invoice changes. Know the insurer’s assistance channel and which itemised bills, medical reports and payment receipts a reimbursement claim needs. Emergency care should not be delayed to negotiate a planned-care approval process.

Public access, private choice and medical acceptance

A public-health identifier, enrollment or visa does not by itself establish funded treatment or private insurance coverage. Resident, employee, dependant, retiree and visitor pathways may differ. Use the destination guide’s scoped official sources and confirm your personal status with the authority; an international policy does not replace a mandatory local arrangement by assumption.

Pre-existing conditions can be accepted, excluded, covered with loading or waiting periods, or lead to rejection depending on written underwriting. Ask how ongoing medication and follow-up are treated, not only whether a diagnosis is named in a benefit table. Declare medical information through the insurer’s approved process, never general WhatsApp criteria.

Frequently asked buying questions

Find the question behind your decision. These answers explain what to check; your accepted policy determines the outcome.

Eligibility & continuity

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Possible outcomes include standard acceptance, an exclusion, additional premium, waiting or moratorium terms, postponement or rejection. Only the written underwriting decision establishes your terms. Symptoms, medication and pending tests may matter even without a diagnosis.

Is there one age limit for international health insurance?

No universal entry or renewal age is assumed. Ask the exact product about entry age, renewal age, dependant rules and medical assessment. A quote form age field is not evidence of eligibility.

Can I move countries without losing cover?

Tell the insurer before the move and obtain written confirmation of residence eligibility, area, issuer, price and continuity. Worldwide treatment cover does not establish portability.

Benefits & treatment settings

Does comprehensive include every benefit?

No standardized promise follows from that label. Check inpatient, day-patient and outpatient definitions, medicines, cancer, chronic care, maternity, mental health, dental and optical separately, with limits and accepted medical terms.

Are maternity and newborn care the same benefit?

No. Routine maternity, complications, neonatal care and congenital conditions may have distinct rules. Confirm the event used for waiting periods and the newborn enrollment deadline.

Does chronic or cancer cover override underwriting?

No. A listed benefit can still exclude a previously existing or related condition. Ask about treatment across admission, infusion, outpatient and home settings as well as individualized exclusions.

Cost & contract limits

Is the cheapest premium the lowest total cost?

Not necessarily. Compare accepted benefits, sublimits, deductibles, fixed copays, percentage coinsurance and provider deposits. Ask for actual quote-based examples rather than an online price estimate.

Do excluded costs count toward my deductible?

Do not assume so. Non-covered charges and costs above a benefit limit can be entirely yours. Confirm the calculation order and any member spending ceiling.

Using a plan

Is network treatment always cashless?

No. Verify the exact plan, provider branch, service and approval. Direct billing may apply only to certain benefits, and member contributions or deposits can remain.

Should I wait for approval in an emergency?

Do not delay urgent medical care. Follow the policy’s notification process as soon as reasonably possible. Planned treatment can require prior authorization; ask who submits it.

Travel, home visits & geography

Does worldwide mean everywhere?

No. Only the selected area, eligible residence and contract exceptions apply. USA may be an option; home visits, restricted destinations, planned treatment and emergency exceptions need separate checks.

Does annual multi-trip mean any trip length?

No. Each trip can have a maximum length, departure/return definition and residence requirement. Confirm extensions and treatment after expiry before an extended stay.

Buying, timing & cancellation

When should I arrange cover?

Allow time to confirm eligibility, accepted medical terms, waiting periods and the actual start date before existing cover ends. Purchase after departure and backdating are not universally permitted.

Can I cancel or switch immediately?

Check the actual cancellation, cooling-off and refund terms, including claims or payment conditions and applicable jurisdiction. Do not cancel current cover before replacement acceptance and dates are confirmed.

How to use this guidance

Evidence & verification scope

Educational guidance, not independently verified policy or eligibility facts.

No current first-party policy version or claim-specific verification date is recorded. Request current wording and a dated quotation; verify personal eligibility with the responsible official authority.
