AXA Global Healthcare is the AXA business that sells international health insurance to people living outside their home country. Its individual and family cover comes in five fixed tiers, with overall annual limits from US$400,000 to US$8,000,000 per member, according to AXA's individual summary of benefits (October 2025).

This review sets out what AXA publishes about those plans: limits, maternity, pre-existing conditions, evacuation, claims and renewal. We read every figure in AXA's own documents on 29 September 2026 and link each one to its source. AXA quotes its limits in sterling, euros and US dollars; this page uses US dollars. We do not score AXA, rank it or quote prices.

In short

AXA Global Healthcare sells five fixed tiers: Foundation, Standard, Comprehensive, Prestige and Prestige Plus. Overall annual limits run from US$400,000 to US$8,000,000. Medical evacuation is included on every tier and is not taken out of the overall limit. Routine maternity is on Prestige and Prestige Plus only, after an 18-month wait. Pre-existing conditions depend on the underwriting route you join on, and moratorium or switch terms need you to be under 80 when cover starts. What plans does AXA Global Healthcare sell?

AXA Global Healthcare sells five fixed tiers, and each tier carries a set list of benefits. You choose the tier, then adjust it with a few options, covered in the next section.

Source: AXA individual summary of benefits, October 2025, pages 3, 5 and 8. Limits are annual and per member. Every tier covers inpatient treatment of a chronic illness flare-up for up to 6 weeks (summary of benefits, page 8); routine follow-up and monitoring starts at Comprehensive, for conditions that arise after you join, according to AXA's individual sales brochure, April 2026.

Three terms apply across the range:

  • Short-term cover: AXA sells the Foundation and Standard plans for any period from 3 to 11 months, according to its short-term cover page.
  • Virtual care: Virtual Doctor, Second Medical Opinion and Mind Health come with every plan, provided by Teladoc Health. Mind Health gives up to six sessions with a psychologist per concern, per year, according to AXA's brochure.
  • Hospital stays: inpatient stays are limited to 120 days per admission, according to AXA's Standard plan product information document.

What can you add or change on an AXA plan?

AXA Global Healthcare lets you change five things on a tier. AXA's own documents say two of them, the excess and whether you include the USA, move the premium.

  • Outpatient on Foundation or Standard: two upgrade options, with combined limits of US$1,600 or US$4,000 a year, according to the summary of benefits (page 6).
  • Dental: non-routine dental, such as replacing crowns, is included from Standard upwards. Routine check-ups are an upgrade on Comprehensive and Prestige and built into Prestige Plus, according to the brochure. AXA does not publish dental waiting periods in the documents we read.
  • Excess: none, or one of five levels per person per year: US$160, US$400, US$800, US$1,600 or US$3,200. Standard without the outpatient upgrade also offers US$8,000 and US$16,000, according to the summary of benefits (page 3).
  • Area of cover: worldwide, or worldwide excluding the USA, according to AXA's plans page. The next section shows what the excluding-USA option still pays.
  • How you pay: monthly, quarterly or annually. AXA's plans page says paying annually saves 5% on your total cost.

AXA's premiums depend on your own details, so this page publishes no prices. Our expat health insurance cost guide explains what moves a premium.

How does AXA cover treatment in the USA?

AXA Global Healthcare pays for planned treatment in the USA only if you buy worldwide cover. On worldwide excluding the USA, it still pays emergency inpatient and day-patient treatment for a condition that starts suddenly while you are there, on every tier except Foundation.

TierEmergency cover in the USA on the excluding-USA option
FoundationNot included
StandardUp to 6 weeks, up to US$16,000
ComprehensiveUp to 6 weeks, up to US$24,000
PrestigeUp to 10 weeks, up to US$32,000
Prestige PlusUp to 10 weeks, up to US$48,000, plus emergency outpatient treatment up to US$3,200

If you travel to the USA often, check these caps against what a US hospital stay costs before you choose the excluding-USA option.

What does AXA Global Healthcare cover for maternity?

AXA Global Healthcare covers routine pregnancy and childbirth on Prestige and Prestige Plus only, and does not sell it as an add-on to the lower tiers, according to AXA's pregnancy and maternity page.

  • Waiting period: 18 months. You must be covered by AXA continuously for 18 months before you can claim the pregnancy benefit (same page).
  • Prestige: routine pregnancy and childbirth up to US$16,000, according to the summary of benefits.
  • Prestige Plus: up to US$19,200 (same document).

The wait runs from the day cover starts, so the plan has to be in place well before a pregnancy.

How does AXA handle pre-existing conditions?

AXA Global Healthcare designs its plans to cover conditions that start after you join, and its plans page says they "don't cover pre-existing conditions". Its retiree cover page adds that some cover may be possible, depending on the underwriting terms you join on. It describes three:

  • Fully underwritten: you give your medical history before you join, and AXA tells you any exclusions it applies.
  • Continued medical exclusions: if you switch from another insurer, AXA may carry over the exclusions on your previous plan.
  • Moratorium: any condition you had in the five years before joining is excluded until you have been a member for two years in a row and have had two trouble-free years for that condition.

Full underwriting settles exclusions before cover starts. A moratorium settles them when you claim, by looking back at your history. Answer the medical questions fully: an undisclosed condition found at claim time can affect whether the claim is paid.

Is medical evacuation included?

Yes. AXA Global Healthcare includes emergency evacuation and repatriation on all five tiers, according to its individual sales brochure. Its evacuation page says AXA does not take the cost out of your overall benefit allowance. On that wording, an evacuation does not reduce the annual limit, which is US$400,000 on Foundation according to the summary of benefits.

How do claims and direct billing work?

AXA Global Healthcare says that "in many cases, we can pay the costs directly for you", according to its brochure. AXA does not publish the size of its direct-billing network or a hospital list in the documents we read. Ask which named hospitals near you it settles with directly before you buy.

On speed, AXA's plans page (footnote 3) states that 83.2% of eligible claims submitted online between January and December 2025 were paid within two days. That is AXA's own figure. It covers online claims only, AXA decides which claims count as eligible, and it does not publish its method.

What happens at renewal, and is there an age limit?

AXA Global Healthcare says it won't increase your renewal premium because of your claims, though the premium can still rise with inflation and age, according to footnote 1 on its plans page. The documents we read do not say whether renewal is automatic or on what grounds AXA could decline to renew.

  • Age at entry: the policyholder and dependants must be under 80 when cover starts to join on moratorium or switch terms. From 80, AXA accepts full medical underwriting, a plan transfer or a group-leave continued exclusions basis only, with some exclusions, according to footnotes 7 and 8 on its retiree cover page.
  • Cooling-off: you can cancel within 14 days of receiving your membership pack and get your premium back, provided no claims have been paid, according to each of AXA's Standard plan product information documents (AXA PPP, AXA XL, AXA Insurance dac).

Who underwrites an AXA Global Healthcare policy?

AXA Global Healthcare is the brand. The insurer on your policy is one of three AXA companies, each named in its own product information document for the Standard plan:

AXA does not publish which insurer applies to which customer. Ask which one is named on your quote, because it decides the regulator and where a complaint goes. AXA's legal information page lists the group's other companies, including AXA Global Healthcare (UK) Limited.

What should you check before buying AXA?

  • The insurer: which of the three AXA companies is named on your quote.
  • The USA: worldwide or excluding the USA, and your tier's emergency cap from the table above.
  • Underwriting: which route you join on, and any exclusions, in writing.
  • Maternity: if a pregnancy is possible within 18 months, only Prestige and Prestige Plus carry the benefit, and the wait still applies.
  • Direct billing: the named hospitals near you that AXA settles with directly.
  • Excess: the level you chose, per person per year.

How does AXA Global Healthcare compare with other insurers?

How we reviewed AXA Global Healthcare

Every figure on this page comes from AXA Global Healthcare's own plan pages, brochure, summary of benefits and product information documents, read on 29 September 2026 and linked beside the figure. Where AXA does not publish a term, we say so. We give no score, no rating and no price, and we do not place AXA above or below any other insurer. The review covers individual and family plans; group plans are out of scope.
