Bupa Global is the international health insurance division of Bupa, and it sells five plan tiers to people living outside their home country: Major Medical, Select, Premier, Elite and Ultimate. We read its brochure, plan pages and policy documents on 28 and 29 September 2026. This review sets out what each tier pays, how long each benefit makes you wait and what Bupa does not publish. We do not score insurers and we do not publish prices.

Which Bupa company insures you depends on where you live, and so can the terms. The figures here come from Bupa Global's Health Plans brochure (April 2026), issued by Bupa Insurance Limited for UK and Channel Islands policies. EEA residents are insured by Bupa Global DAC in Ireland, and Hong Kong residents buy a separate product from Bupa (Asia) Limited with its own limits, according to Bupa's legal notices and Hong Kong plan page. Check the insurer named on your quote.

In short

Bupa Global sells five fixed tiers. Its April 2026 brochure puts annual limits between £1,000,000 (US$1,700,000) on Select and unlimited on Ultimate, pays medical evacuation in full on every tier, and covers maternity on Elite and Ultimate only, after an 18-month wait. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless Bupa agrees to cover them for a higher premium, and we found no moratorium option in Bupa's documents. This is general information, not advice on your situation.

What does each Bupa Global plan pay?

Bupa Global's five tiers each carry a fixed set of benefits. The overall annual limit is the most Bupa pays in a policy year, and it is the first number to check.

Source: Bupa Global Health Plans brochure, April 2026, pages 12 to 13. Every Major Medical deductible option is limited to UK or Channel Islands residents. Sterling is Bupa's headline currency; the brochure also gives euro and US dollar figures. Outpatient limits are per policy year. On Select, Premier and Elite the highest deductible applies to benefits other than outpatient care.

Major Medical is the hospital-focused tier, with no outpatient cover. On Select, Premier and Elite you also choose an outpatient deductible of none, £250, £500 or £1,000, according to the same April 2026 brochure. Ultimate is sold through Private Client by Bupa, which describes it as having "no overall annual limit".

Bupa's premiums depend on your age, area of cover, deductible, tier and medical history, and we publish no prices. Our expat health insurance cost guide explains what moves a premium.

What does Bupa Global cover beyond hospital treatment?

Bupa Global ties its extra benefits to tiers, so the higher the tier, the more is built in. All figures below are from its April 2026 brochure.

  • Health screening: £750 a year on Select, £1,250 on Premier and £1,500 on Elite, each after a 10-month wait. Ultimate pays £5,000 a year with no wait.
  • Dental: preventive dental on Premier and Elite (two visits a year) and on Ultimate, after 6 months. Orthodontics on Elite (£2,500 a year) and Ultimate (£10,000 a year) after 12 months.
  • Rehabilitation: 45 days a year on Major Medical, 30 on Select and Premier, 60 on Elite and 90 on Ultimate.
  • Chronic and congenital conditions: covered on all five tiers if diagnosed after you join.
  • Children at no extra cost: Ultimate covers two children under 16 per insured parent, subject to underwriting. The other four tiers do not.

There is no general waiting period on any tier, the brochure states. Waits apply benefit by benefit, as above.

How does Bupa Global cover maternity?

Bupa Global covers maternity on Elite and Ultimate only, after an 18-month waiting period, according to its April 2026 brochure. On Elite that brochure sets £10,000 (US$17,000) for a normal birth, £10,000 for a medically essential caesarean, £5,000 a year for pre- and post-natal treatment and £20,000 (US$34,000) for complications. Ultimate pays all four in full.

Assisted fertility treatment carries the same 18-month wait in the same brochure: £6,000 a year on Elite and £10,000 on Ultimate. Select, Premier and Major Medical cover neither.

Newborns have their own rule. Ultimate's membership guide (October 2026 edition) says a baby is added from birth with no personal exclusions if either parent has been a Bupa Global member for at least 18 months before the birth and Bupa receives the newborn application within 30 days of it. Babies born after assisted reproduction, to a surrogate or in the US, and adopted children, go through medical review instead.

How does Bupa Global handle pre-existing conditions?

Bupa Global excludes pre-existing conditions "unless you have applied for cover that includes a medical loading to cover these conditions", according to its April 2026 brochure. The same brochure lists cover for certain pre-existing conditions as available on all five tiers, subject to underwriting. So a condition you declare is either covered for a higher premium or excluded.

Bupa's individual application form (January 2026) describes the policy as "fully medical underwritten". You declare your medical history, and Bupa's medical team sets your terms before cover starts. We found no moratorium option in any Bupa Global document we read.

Answer every medical question fully. The same form warns that without complete and accurate information Bupa may be unable to pay all or part of a claim, or may treat the policy "as if it had not existed".

Is there an age limit to join Bupa Global?

Bupa Global's target market statements (May 2026) describe its Health Plans as meeting the needs of "customers of any age (legally able to contract)" and state: "There is no upper age limit." That document covers plans issued by Bupa Insurance Limited and is written for brokers.

For policies issued by Bupa Global DAC or Bupa's other insurers, we found no published maximum age. If you are applying later in life, ask for the age rule in writing with your quote.

Is medical evacuation included with Bupa Global?

Yes. Bupa Global pays medical evacuation and repatriation in full on all five tiers, according to its April 2026 brochure. Its plan comparison page describes evacuation as "reasonable transport costs to the nearest appropriate place of treatment, when the treatment needed is not available nearby".

Non-medical evacuation, for conflicts and natural disasters, is a different benefit. The brochure pays it in full on Ultimate and does not cover it on the other four tiers.

How does Bupa Global cover treatment in the United States?

Bupa Global sells worldwide cover or worldwide excluding the US on every tier, and Europe including the UK on Select, Premier and Elite. On the excluding-US option, every tier keeps 28 days of emergency US cover, according to its April 2026 brochure. The same brochure states that Bupa is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, its route into US providers.

US cover is only for people who are not permanent US residents, per Bupa's application form. Ultimate's membership guide adds that Bupa will not renew cover for anyone who becomes a permanent US resident.

How do claims and direct billing work with Bupa Global?

Bupa Global says its network of medical facilities offers "cashless settlement for hospital treatment", and cites over 2 million providers in 190 countries, in its April 2026 brochure. Members manage claims, documents and membership cards through MembersWorld, Bupa's app and portal.

We found no published claims turnaround time. Direct settlement is decided facility by facility, so ask Bupa whether the hospital you would use is in its network before you need it.

What happens at renewal, and can you cancel?

Bupa Global renews every tier automatically and does not cancel a policy because of your claims pattern or history, according to its April 2026 brochure. On Ultimate, Private Client by Bupa adds that "claiming on your plan will not increase your individual premiums". Premiums can still change at renewal for other reasons, and Ultimate's membership guide says Bupa writes to you before renewal with the new premium and the reasons for any changes.

Cancellation terms are published for Ultimate only. Its membership guide (October 2026 edition) refunds the whole policy year's premium if you cancel within the first 30 days of cover for that policy year and nobody on the policy has claimed for treatment in those 30 days. After that, cancellation takes effect 14 days after you ask, and Bupa refunds premium paid for the time after that. For Major Medical, Select, Premier and Elite, Bupa's membership guides were unavailable online when we checked, so the cancellation terms for those tiers are not published.

Who insures a Bupa Global policy?

Bupa Global is a trading name, and the insurer behind it depends on where you live. Bupa's legal notices list the entities:

  • UK and Channel Islands policies: Bupa Insurance Limited, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.
  • EEA policies: Bupa Global DAC, Ireland, regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland.
  • Middle East: Bupa Global Middle East (DIFC) Ltd, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.
  • Hong Kong: Bupa (Asia) Limited, regulated by the Hong Kong Insurance Authority, with its own product set and limits, per Bupa's Hong Kong plan page. Our Hong Kong expat health insurance guide covers that market.

The regulator and the complaints route follow the insurer named on your certificate, not the brand.

How we reviewed Bupa Global

Where Bupa does not publish a term, we say so. We do not score, rank or price insurers. Your certificate of insurance is the document that binds.
