In short

Cigna Global sells four tiers: Close Care, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Silver, Gold and Platinum start with hospital cover and let you add up to four modules, including outpatient and medical evacuation. Close Care covers only your country of residence and your country of nationality. Maternity cover is on Gold and Platinum only, after a 12-month wait, or 24 months for treatment in the UK, Hong Kong or Singapore. Cigna publishes no upper age limit to join. This is general information, not advice on your situation.

What plans does Cigna Global sell, and what are the limits?

Cigna Global sells four tiers, and each carries an annual overall limit per person per period of cover.

Source: Cigna Global benefits table, annual policies starting or renewing on or after 15 February 2026. Emergency cover outside your area applies if you do not hold Worldwide including USA cover, and pays inpatient and daypatient costs only.

  • Areas of cover: Silver, Gold and Platinum are sold as Worldwide excluding USA or Worldwide including USA. Close Care covers your country of residence and your country of nationality only, according to Cigna's member FAQ.
  • Hospital room: the benefits table pays inpatient and daypatient treatment in full on every tier, in a private room on Silver, Gold and Platinum and a semi-private room on Close Care.
  • United States: US treatment needs Worldwide including USA cover. Cigna's product information document says it pays 20% less for treatment in the USA outside the Cigna network.

How is a Cigna Global plan built?

A Cigna Global plan starts with the core, International Medical Insurance: hospital stays and treatment, including cancer care and mental health, with maternity on Gold and Platinum, according to the brochure (February 2026, pp. 11 to 13). On Silver, Gold and Platinum you can then add any of four modules, described on Cigna's optional benefits page and in the brochure (p. 11):

  • International Outpatient: GP and specialist consultations, prescribed drugs and diagnostic tests. Annual limit US$15,000 on Silver, US$35,000 on Gold and paid in full on Platinum.
  • International Medical Evacuation: medical evacuation, medical repatriation and repatriation of mortal remains, each paid in full.
  • International Health and Wellbeing: routine physical examinations, cancer screenings and access to counsellors.
  • International Vision and Dental: preventive, routine and major dental treatment, eye tests, glasses and lenses.

Close Care works differently. It comes with its own Outpatient and Wellness Care benefit, with an annual limit of US$5,000 per person, according to the benefits table.

Because outpatient and evacuation are modules, two Cigna quotes on the same tier can cover different things. Check which modules each quote includes before you compare what it costs.

How do Cigna Global deductibles and cost shares work?

Cigna Global lets you lower the premium by agreeing to pay part of each claim yourself. On the core hospital plan, the benefits table offers:

  • Deductible: US$0, 375, 750, 1,500, 3,000, 7,500 or 10,000, on all four tiers.
  • Cost share: 0%, 10%, 20% or 30% of each claim after the deductible.
  • Out-of-pocket maximum: the cost share stops at US$2,000 or US$5,000, whichever you choose.

The outpatient module has its own deductible of US$0, 150, 500, 1,000 or 1,500, according to the optional benefits page. Our expat health insurance cost guide explains how deductibles and other factors move a premium. We publish no Cigna prices.

How does maternity cover work on Cigna Global?

Cigna Global covers maternity on Gold and Platinum only. Silver and Close Care do not include it, according to the benefits table.

  • Limits: routine maternity care US$7,000 on Gold and US$14,000 on Platinum. Complications of maternity US$14,000 on Gold and US$28,000 on Platinum (brochure, February 2026, p. 14).
  • Waiting period: 12 months from the start of the mother's cover. For treatment in the UK, Hong Kong or Singapore, the brochure (p. 14) sets it at 24 months.
  • Depends on where you live: Cigna's optional benefits page says the maternity wait "may be 12 or 24 months depending on your insurance entity". Ask which applies before you buy.
  • Newborns: a newborn "may be required to be medically underwritten", according to the benefits table.

The wait runs from the day cover starts, so it has to begin before a pregnancy. Having a baby in Singapore? Our maternity insurance guide for Singapore covers the local options.

How does Cigna Global handle pre-existing conditions?

Cigna Global underwrites through a medical questionnaire at application. Based on your answers, Cigna "may decide to add special exclusions to your plan", according to its member FAQ. Its product information document adds that Cigna "may agree to include certain pre-existing conditions at an additional premium in some circumstances". No moratorium option appears on any public Cigna page we read.

The International Outpatient module also pays some ongoing costs for conditions that were excluded. Cigna's optional benefits page lists:

  • 60+ Pre-Existing Condition Care: from age 60, outpatient treatment to maintain a listed condition that you declared and that Cigna excluded. Up to US$500 on Silver, US$1,500 on Gold and US$3,000 on Platinum.
  • 40-59 Pre-Existing Condition Care: ages 40 to 59, the same benefit on Platinum only, up to US$2,000.
  • Listed conditions include: hypertension, type 2 diabetes, glaucoma, arthritis, asthma, osteoporosis, coronary artery disease and high cholesterol.

Cigna's member FAQ asks you to complete the questionnaire "as accurately as possible", because its exclusions are set from your answers.

Is medical evacuation included with Cigna Global?

No. Medical evacuation is an optional module at Cigna Global, not part of the core plan. Cigna's optional benefits page lists the International Medical Evacuation module for Silver, Gold and Platinum, with:

  • Evacuation and repatriation: medical evacuation, medical repatriation and repatriation of mortal remains, each paid in full.
  • Compassionate visits: travel costs up to US$1,200, for up to five trips per lifetime.

The core plan pays local and air ambulance in full on Silver, Gold and Platinum, and road ambulance only on Close Care, according to the benefits table. Cigna's pages do not list the evacuation module for Close Care. If you live somewhere without the treatment you might need, check evacuation is on the quote.

How do Cigna Global claims and direct billing work?

Cigna Global pays hospitals and doctors directly "where possible", according to its member FAQ. Where it cannot, you pay and claim back.

  • Speed: Cigna says it aims to process a guarantee of payment within one hour and a claim within 5 working days (brochure, February 2026, p. 3). The member FAQ counts the 5 working days from receiving your completed paperwork.
  • Currency: the FAQ says you can be reimbursed in more than 135 currencies.
  • Network: the brochure (p. 3) describes a network of over 2 million healthcare providers across 200 countries.

These are Cigna's stated aims, not measured results. Ask which hospitals near you Cigna settles with directly.

What happens at renewal, and is there an age limit?

Cigna Global publishes no upper age limit to join. Its seniors page says "we welcome applications up to any age".

  • Renewal: the policy is an annual contract that renews automatically "unless you, or we in certain circumstances, choose not to renew", according to the product information document. The circumstances are not published.
  • Claims and premiums: the seniors page says your future premiums "aren't based on your claims history".
  • Cancelling: the Guernsey-issued product information document gives 14 days to cancel from the start date, then a minimum term of 3 months. Terms for policies issued elsewhere can differ.
  • Paying: annually, quarterly or monthly. The brochure (p. 12) says annual or quarterly payment makes the premium "slightly lower", without a figure.

Who underwrites Cigna Global?

The company that insures a Cigna Global policy depends on where the policy is issued. It decides which regulator oversees the contract.

  • Policies issued from Guernsey: Cigna Global Insurance Company Limited, licensed in Guernsey, according to the product information document.
  • Example, Singapore: policies are underwritten by Cigna Europe Insurance Company S.A.-N.V. Singapore Branch (brochure, p. 19).
  • Example, Dubai International Financial Centre: the underwriting agent is Cigna Insurance Management Services (DIFC) Limited, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (same brochure, p. 19).
  • Ownership: Cigna Global belongs to The Cigna Group. Its second-quarter 2026 filing still reports an International Health business serving "globally mobile individuals".

Frequently asked questions

Four: Close Care, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The annual limit per person is US$500,000 on Close Care, US$1,000,000 on Silver, US$2,000,000 on Gold and paid in full on Platinum, according to the Cigna Global benefits table for policies from 15 February 2026. Close Care covers only your country of residence and your country of nationality.

Does Cigna Global include medical evacuation?

Not as standard. Medical evacuation is an optional module, International Medical Evacuation, listed for Silver, Gold and Platinum on Cigna's optional benefits page. With the module, evacuation and repatriation are paid in full. Check that it is on your quote.

How long is the Cigna Global maternity waiting period?

12 months, or 24 months for treatment in the UK, Hong Kong or Singapore, according to the Cigna Global brochure of February 2026. Maternity is covered on Gold and Platinum only. Cigna says the wait can depend on the insurance entity that issues your policy.

Does Cigna Global cover pre-existing conditions?

Sometimes. Cigna uses a medical questionnaire and may exclude a declared condition or cover it for an extra premium. No moratorium option appears on its public pages. From age 60, the optional outpatient module pays up to US$500 to US$3,000 a year, by tier, towards maintaining some excluded conditions, according to Cigna's optional benefits page.

Can I get Cigna Global health insurance if I'm over 60?

Yes. Cigna Global's seniors page says it welcomes applications "up to any age", and that future premiums "aren't based on your claims history". Cover is medically underwritten, so Cigna may exclude a condition you declare. If you add the International Outpatient module, Cigna's optional benefits page lists 60+ Pre-Existing Condition Care, which pays up to US$500 to US$3,000 a year, by tier, towards maintaining some excluded conditions.
